2015 Gaming Screen Build

Document the build progress for your screen or computer setup.

Well, it's begun. I'm working up the screen setup I'm using in 2015. It's going to be a mixture of earlier parts for the frame. I'm switching back to my 2010-2011 13 foot wide rolled tubing frame and back to triple-projector. While I liked dual-projector and learned a lot from that build, the 10-foot wide screen was a bit limiting to me. I'm much more interested in revisiting the 13-15 foot wide layout.

This build is primarily being done to work up the new tutorial content for NTHUSIM 4.0. Thanks goes to Optoma for letting me borrow three GT1080s while I work up the tutorials. I'll probably be back using my GT720s in April, but I'll be enjoying the GT1080s while I can.

Picked up a roll of indoor/outdoor black carpet for the floor of the screen area. Finally unpacked the projectors. Now I'm clearing out space for the screen in my shop area. Waiting for a few warmer days to continue the screen build. Doing a screen build up in winter in a shop isn't 100% ideal. The room is there, just not the climate control. Thank goodness projectors push a lot of heat.

The shop is now a bit more cleaned out. I unrolled the black carpet to see the footprint size. Incidentally, you can see the frame for my 2011, 2012 and 2013 screens in the pic while I'm moving things around. Most of that'll go into storage while I'm rearranging things.

Tomorrow will most likely be more shop cleaning and putting up the truss frame. I've got good weather and temperature for the next 4-5 days, so I hope to have most of this build put together within the next week.

I decided to fit test the ceiling truss layout before finishing up for the night. Tentatively, this'll be the truss configuration. Will use two 4 foot truss for each leg. Overall dimensions for the truss will be 164" wide x 116" deep x 103" tall.

Where did you get the ceiling truss?

I've had it for awhile. It's the truss I used for convention booths. Originally purchased it from Cheap Lights in Houston. http://www.cheaplights.com/ I drove down to Houston in 2012 to get the truss sections. Shipping was crazy on truss, so it was just easier to drive down with a pickup and get it. If I recall it was around $10/foot, so the 4-foot sections were around $40 and the 6-foot sections were around $60. I don't recall what the connector blocks cost. I used this truss throughout 2012 for marketing booth events but switched in favor to a popup tent in 2013 because logistically, truss is a total pain to set up and take down on short notice. I'm using some of my older labor intensive pieces because the screen is going to be up for awhile. I'll be using this setup throughout 2015 to do tutorial and marketing content.

Slow going today. I'm wiping down the individual truss pieces because they got pretty dirty in storage. That's slowing me up a bit. I have about a third of the truss built. Hoping tomorrow will be a bit more productive.

I gave up on waiting for the temperature to cooperate, so I spent the last week insulating the ceiling and sheetrocking it. Now to where I wanted to be last month. Ready to get things assembled.

The shop is now holding 70F and is climate controlled. Sure beats that 15F the other day.
